| Troon Junior Open for the Tom Lehman Trophies |
The Troon Junior Golf Open for the Tom Lehman Trophies is a hugely successful, and reputedly the World’s largest, one-day junior golf tournament. Since the inaugural event in 1998, some 4,000 junior golfers have participated in this auspicious golf event. Over the years, youngsters not only from Scotland, but also from numerous UK and European destinations and far-flung areas of the world such as Australia, America, Canada and Thailand have participated.
The Troon Junior Golf Open for the Tom Lehman Trophies is a thoroughly enjoyable day of golf competition. An averagre of 500 young golfers, across all handicap and pre-handicap categories of girls and boys, participate over the Troon Darley, Lochgreen and Fullarton Golf Courses.
The quality of the Troon Junior Open, in golfing terms, has developed to such an extent that in recent years the boys’ scratch competition over Darley Golf Course has required balloting for handicaps of twelve and under. In recognition of the sustainable, high quality golf being played over the Darley, the Ayrshire Golf Association have once again included the competition as a counting event in the Ayrshire Junior Order of Merit.
In 1997, Tom Lehman, the reigning Open Champion, donated a professional fee of £500 to South Ayrshire Council to be used to promote the development of junior golf in the Troon area. The Council used this thoughtful gift to purchase two silver replica claret jugs (best boy’s and best girl’s gross) and 1998 saw the launch of the first junior open for the Tom Lehman Trophies.
The Troon Junior Golf Open consists of five separate handicap competitions, each open to youngsters aged 8 years and over and under the age of 18.
