Welcome
As the Provost of South Ayrshire
Council I would like to extend
a warm welcome to everyone
connected with Ayr Golf Week.
In South Ayrshire we are very
fortunate to have a range of
outstanding golf courses, which
include Council courses, private
clubs and even two Open
Championship courses.
The Open Championship courses,
which are seen by millions of
people around the world on
television broadcasts, show people
some of the superb golf facilities
available in this area. Not everyone
plays golf, but the spectacular
scenery and glimpses of life in
South Ayrshire draw people from
around the world to this area.
South Ayrshire Council supports
a range of sporting activities, and
actively encourages involvement
in events such as Ayr Golf Week,
either as a player or a spectator.
Golf is enjoyed by people of all
ages and the Council is particularly
keen to see children take up the
sport. Young people are our future
and they have the potential to be
our world golfing champions of the
future.
The South Ayrshire Junior
Golf Action Plan Junior Golf
Development Programme, which
is now in its third year, has given 3
groups of
primary 5
pupils the
chance to try
golf during
school time.
The pupils
receive
coaching
from volunteer
adult golfers and get a chance to
play at local golf facilities. This has
led to a number of young boys and
girls taking up golf and continuing
to play in their own time.
Many people who do not play
golf enjoy attending events such
as this one, to walk the courses,
enjoy the scenery and to soak up
the atmosphere. An added bonus
of Ayr Golf Week is that it is so
easy to get to, by road, rail, or
domestic and international flights
at Prestwick International Airport.
As well as enjoying the golf I would
encourage people to make time to
see the historic buildings, beaches
varied scenery, the racecourse,
high quality shopping, and a wide
range of places to eat and socialise
that Ayr and South Ayrshire have
on offer.
I hope that everyone enjoys this
event, and that visitors to the area
return again soon.
