2007 Troon Junior Golf Open for the Tom Lehman Trophies Tiger Woods may well have just won his thirteenth major title, but for South Ayrshire all eyes were focused on the youngsters last Tuesday 7th August. The tenth anniversary of the Troon Junior Golf Open for the Tom Lehman Trophies took place and is still reputedly the World’s largest, and arguably most successful one-day junior golf tournament. Played over the Troon Darley, Lochgreen and Fullarton Golf Courses, the 2007 event boasted no fewer than 490 entries across all handicap and pre-handicap categories of girls and boys. For the fourth year in succession, the Ayrshire Golf Association nominated the Darley competition to count as an Order of Merit event for the Ayrshire Boys. Adam Foley of Ayr Belleisle returned a fine 73 to win the Tom Lehman Trophy for boys. He was closely followed by Malcolm Pennycott of Whiting Bay whose 74 (better inward half) pipped Callum Stewart of Ayr Belleisle. One shot further back on 75 was the defending champion and Ayrshire Boys Strokeplay Champion Euan Brown of Kilmarnock Barassie. Lochgreen hosted the boys in the 13 to 20-handicap category. The CSS for the day was 72 and Nicholas Hannon of Ballochmyle returned a fine 78 to lift the trophy for best gross. In the net category only the better inward half separated first, second and third places with Ryan Mc Neil (Ravenspark), Mark McKelvie ( Caprington) and Fraser Peebles (Cathcart Castle) claiming the top 3 spots respectively after all recording a nett 66. The Fullarton course was the competition venue for boys and girls with handicaps over twenty-one and twenty-eight respectively. The best gross returned by a boy was won by Aaron Gray of Welbeck who recorded a 73. In the net category Blair Gavin of Kilmarnock Barassie returned an amazing net 49. Runner up in this event was Craig McClue of Kilmarnock Barassie who recorded a 52. The prize for the girls’ best net score was given to Rachel Irvine of Largs with a 59. South Ayrshire Council’s Provost Winifred Sloan and Councillor Nan McFarlane presented the trophies and prizes and thanked all the sponsors who made the event possible. Alistair Glennie of main sponsor Golf Holidays Ltd presented the Tom Lehman trophies to the two main winners, Adam Foley and Eilidh Briggs. Darley Golf Course
